In a nutshell:  Health-care services are applying mentorship in their settings, learning from business and industry where it is a popular innovation. This article looks at the concept of mentorship for newly appointed physicians in their first substantive senior post and in particular at its deployment to enhance patient safety. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Medical Directors, Deputy Medical Directors and Clinical Directors from 9 acute NHS Trusts in the Yorkshire and Humber region in the north of England. A number of beneficial outcomes were found, including greater personal and professional support, organisational commitment, and general well-being. Providing newly appointed senior physicians with support through mentorship was considered to enhance the safety of patient care.

Do safety checklists improve teamwork and communication in the operating room? A systematic review

In a nutshell:  This systematic review aimed to assess the impact of surgical safety checklists on the quality of teamwork and communication in the operating room (OR). The methods for assessing teamwork and communication included surveys, observations, interviews, and 360° assessments. The evidence suggests that safety checklists can improve the quality of OR teamwork and communication, however, when used incorrectly or when individuals do not believe in the process, checklists may have a negative impact on the function of the team. Overall, safety checklists are beneficial for OR teamwork and communication and this may be one device through which patient outcomes are improved.

Empowerment or rhetoric? Investigating the role of NHS Foundation Trust governors in the governance of patient safety

In a nutshell: The authors looked at the ways that NHS Foundation Trusts achieve inclusive governance by involving local communities and analysed this by studying lay governor involvement in the formal governance structures to improve patient safety. Interviews were conducted and observations of meetings and documentary analysis were carried out at a case study site. A national survey and follow up telephone interviews were conducted with the Foundation Trusts. Findings from the survey showed some involvement of governors in the governance of patient safety. The study revealed a lack of inclusivity by Foundation Trusts of lay governors in patient safety governance and it is suggested that action is needed to empower governors to undertake their statutory duties more effectively.

In a nutshell:  This qualitative interview study aimed to identify strategies to facilitate the sustainability of a quality and safety improvement collaborative entitled the Safer Patients Initiative (SPI) and its successes. The study presents the key strategies that principle programme coordinators across 20 NHS organizations consider to be key in order to sustain their own improvement programme and its successes, during the supported phase of the programme and 1 year on.
